Former Conservative Party leader, Michael Howard, said Britain would go to war with Spain in order to “stand by” Gibraltar, in a Sunday morning interview with Sophy Ridge.
Mr Howard likened Gibraltar to the Falklands and Theresa May to Margaret Thatcher, saying: “Thirty-five years ago this week, another woman Prime Minister sent a task force half way across the world to defend the freedom of another small group of British people against another Spanish speaking country.
“And I’m sure the Prime Minister will show the same resolve in standing by the people of Gibraltar.”
The comments came after the European Council’s draft negotiation guidelines suggested Spain would have a veto over all EU-UK decisions made regarding Gibraltar.
“After the United Kingdom leaves the Union, no agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom,” the guidelines read.
Downing Street responded, stating Theresa May “remains steadfastly committed” to its support for Gibraltar, its people and its economy.
