A video has emerged of Steve Baker – a newly appointed minister in the Department for Exiting the European Union – calling for the EU to be “wholly torn down”.

Steve baker told the audience at a Libertarian Alliance event that “UKIP and the Better Off Out campaign lack ambition. I think the European Union needs to be wholly torn down.”

“What I want is free trade and peace amongst all the nations of the European Union and the world, and in my view, the European Union is an obstacle to that,” he added.

Before becoming a minister, Steve Baker led the European Research Group, which consists of Conservative MPs with an avidly anti-EU agenda. The group has been used as a means of organising Brexiteer backbenchers to pressure Conservative leaders from within.

Theresa May’s decision to appoint Mr Baker was seen as a move to show that her hard Brexit plan has not changed, despite her disastrous election showing.
